Preventing Nausea after Surgery
Many patients have concerns about having nausea after their explant surgery. A lot of these patients have had issues with nausea after previous surgical procedures. Scientific data shows patients who are at the highest risk of post op nausea vomiting are:
- Young
- Female
- Nonsmokers
- Patients with a history of nausea/vomiting with other surgeries
- Patients undergoing operations on their chest
Since most of our explant patients fall into these categories, we do our best here at the Cosmetic Surgical Center to try to minimize nausea for our patients. We use IV medications (Phenergan and Zofran) to help during and after the procedure. We also give the patients a Zofran dissolvable tablet prescription for when they are home. Lastly, we use a newer drug called Aprepitant prior to the surgery to help prevent nausea. The addition of Aprepitant has significantly helped many patients who previously had issue with post op nausea/vomiting in their past.
While no one can guarantee a nausea free recovery, we have found this cocktail of medications to be very effective in limiting post op nausea and vomiting for our patients.
