There are many different reasons a patient might decide on breast implant removal, also known as breast explant surgery. In rare cases, they might be experiencing a rupture, infection, or capsular contracture. On the other hand, the patient may simply no longer be happy with their breasts’ appearance after weight change, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or aging.

Regardless of the reason(s), you should be able to have a renewed, beautiful look after your implants are removed. One of the best ways to achieve a natural appearance after a breast explant is to combine it with a breast lift, or mastopexy.

What Happens During a Breast Explant Procedure?

The main goal during a breast explant is to remove the implant along with the scar tissue surrounding it, called a capsule. Additionally, any internal sutures or leaked silicone (if applicable) are removed. If necessary, the pectoral muscles are also repaired.

What is a Breast Lift?

Breast lifts are performed on women who have begun to notice a droopy or sagging chest appearance, often with downward-facing nipples. During mastopexy surgery, excess skin is removed, the internal tissue is tightened, and (if needed) the nipples and areolae are reoriented.

How An Explantation and Breast Lift Are Combined for Optimal Results

A breast lift is not the same as a breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty), which is centered around removing internal breast tissue. But of course, a breast explant on its own will result in a smaller size, not just an irregular shape. Therefore, in addition to the strategies mentioned above, Dr. Rai uses a technique called auto augmentation during his breast implant removal with lift procedures.

With auto augmentation, he can replace some of that lost volume by moving tissue from the bottom of the breast up higher to add needed projection and perkiness. While the top layer of skin at the bottom of the breast will be removed as part of the breast lift process, the underlying tissue is moved up but otherwise left intact.
