Dissolvable Sutures and Wound Glue

Most patients don’t really know what type of sutures are used during their procedures. During your explant procedure the incisions will be closed in multiple layers with all dissolvable sutures. That means the suture material will be broken down by the body and there will not be any permanent sutures remaining. Additionally, all the sutures are under the skin level so there will be no visible sutures. This helps optimize the final scar. Also, we don’t use any type of wound glue or wound tape on the incisions (steri strips). We have found they don’t improve the scar or healing. […]

Will I get a nerve block for post operative pain?

Typically, at the end of every operation Dr. Rai will inject a long-acting anesthetic to try to minimize post operative pain for his patients. While this can help it is important to understand that there will still be pain present from the operation. Dr. Rai will use a long-acting anesthetic called Bupivacaine. This will typically last between 6- 8 hours. There is another medication called Exparel. This is the same bupivacaine but manufactured as an extended release. In theory Exparel can last up to 72 hours. Dr. Rai does offer Exparel in his practice and about 30% of patients will […]

Ozempic

Ozempic is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist used commonly to help treat diabetes. It is used now to help with weight loss. While it does help a lot of patients lose weight, it needs to be stopped prior to your operation. Ozempic and other GLP-1 agonists work by slowing the gastric emptying, which cause patients to feel full and reduce their appetite. Prior to your operation we will instruct you to not eat or drink anything for several hours. If someone is on these medications, they can still have a full stomach. This puts them at risk for vomiting. If […]

Auto-Augmentation Breast Lift

A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a procedure that is often done at the same time as an explant. Once the implant is removed there can be some loose skin of the breast that is no longer being filled. A breast lift accomplishes three things: It raises the nipple to a higher position on the breast It reduces the size of the areola It tightens up the skin at the lower part of the breast An auto-augmentation breast lift utilizes the breast tissue at the bottom of the breast to try to fill and shape the lower breast. This works best for patients […]
